Earthquakes are very dangerous disasters that cannot be predicted. It is important to have knowledge of earthquakes so they will not be as scary. The most important thing to do during an earthquake is to stay calm. I will teach you how you can prepare for an earthquake, what to do during it, and what you should do after the shaking stops.
Consult a professional to figure out how you can make your house more earthquake resistant. There are many simple things you can do to make sure you are safe during an earthquake like putting heavy things on lower shelves and putting fragile objects into a cabinet. Also, pick a spot in every room that you could go to if there was an earthquake. It would be good to take a first aid class and know how to use a fire extinguisher. Find an out of town family contact that you could go to if your house was severely damaged by an earthquake. Make an emergency earthquake kit that includes: water, canned food, can opener, sleeping bag, radio, blankets, medicine, flashlight, extra batteries, and a first aid kit.
During an earthquake, remember to Drop to the ground, Cover yourself, and Hold on to your shelter. If you are inside, do not leave the building. Avoid stairs, doorways, book cases, file cabinets, and other heavy objects. Try to go to a corner or get under a table or desk. Move as little as possible. Do not use electric appliances, and if you are cooking, turn off the stove. If you are outside, stay away from buildings or trees. Put your head between your knees. If you are driving, make sure you are not under any trees, bridges, power lines, or large signs. If you aren’t, stop and stay in your car.
After the earthquake, expect aftershocks, or smaller earthquakes after a bigger one. Also know that the lights will probably be out. Check yourself and others for injuries. Turn on the radio, and extinguish small fires. Do not enter a damaged building, and do not go on elevators. Be careful when you open a cabinet or cupboard, and don’t drink from taps or eat or drink from open containers because they may contain glass. Also remember not to use the phone unless it is a life threatening situation.
Remember to stay calm at all times during an earthquake. They may be dangerous, but you will be safe if you remember these tips the next time you are in an earthquake.
